Roots and Wings

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE:  Job 8:7-9

And though you started with little, you will end with much. Just ask the previous generation. Pay attention to the experience of our ancestors. For we were born but yesterday and know nothing. Our days on earth are as fleeting as a shadow.

TODAY’S MESSAGE:

Matthew 1 and Luke 3 present the genealogies of Jesus, all the way back to Adam. Many modern genealogists are able to get back to medieval times or even earlier, and today’s amateur does quite well with the help of the internet.

Trace your family history with your children. Ask the older members of the family for any information they may have. Don’t forget that siblings are the only people in the world with whom you share the exact genealogy. Share the task of compiling what you find, and see how many generations back you can go. Hire a professional genealogist or do your own research online.

Keep your old family photographs organized. Photo albums are the easiest way to do this; just keep adding them in chronological order. Newer photos are stored digitally. As a favour to future generations, note the date and location of the photos, and who is in them.

The two greatest gifts you can give your children are roots and wings. Their roots are planted firmly within family traditions; their wings will take them to new heights.
