Household Help

I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard…”But the Proverbs 31 woman had servants. I could be a success in the home if I had the kind of help she had!”

You do, and then some!

The Proverbs 31 wife and the girls she had working for her –depending on the translation, they are referred to as maidens, maidservants, and servant girls –carried on a multitude of tasks each and every day. The laundry had to be taken to the river and washed. The fire had to be laid, and the water fetched from the well or cistern. Clothing needed to be made, which meant that the threads for the loom had to be created at the spindle – after the wool or flax was located.

When was the last time you had to do any of these tasks? Homemakers today have appliances that do much of the work for us, so even those of us who work alone have as much household help as the Proverbs 31 woman.

Notice that the Proverbs 31 woman cared for her servants. Proverbs 31:15 says that she prepares food for her family and gives the servants a portion of it.  The woman of today is like her when she makes sure that all her appliances are in working order, has them repaired promptly so they don’t get worse, and makes minor household repairs.
